I am feeling very sentimental tonight and spent many hours browsing youtube for videos of my favorite songs. I listened to a bunch of songs and decided to make my top 25 list of favorite songs of all time.
I thought of putting all videos here, but since there are too many, I thought I’ll just put links instead. Do click and listen to these amazing songs because these are examples of GREAT music from the past. Musicians don’t make music like these anymore.
In case you are wondering, I mainly listen to progressive rock, jazz, soul and funk from the 1970s and 80s, which is why (maybe) some of you are not familiar with the names of the artists or the songs.
1. King of Pain – The Police (I am absolutely in love with STING – since I was 10!)
2. Street Life- Randy Crawford
3. Faithfully – Journey
4. Woman in chains – Tears for Fears
5. Louisiana Sunday Afternoon – Diane Schuur
6. Carpet Crawlers – Genesis
7. River Man – Nick Drake
8. Move on up – Curtis Mayfield
9. Gypsy woman – Brian Hyland
10. Breathe – Pink Floyd
11. Telephone line – Electric Light Orchestra
12. Your latest trick – Dire Straits
13. Good Enough – Sarah Mclachlan
14. Ruthless Queen – Kayak
15. I talk to the wind – King Crimson
16. River – Joni Mitchell
17. Through the Barricades – Spandau Ballet
18. Proud Mary – Tina Turner
19. I’m in you – Peter Frampton
20. Prophet Song – Queen
21. Higher Ground – Stevie Wonder
22. It’s Alright (Baby’s Coming back) – Eurythmics
23. Juicy – Roy Hargrove fet. Renee Neufville
24. Down on the street – Shakatak
25. I don’t know – Noa
There you go, my top 25 favorites, I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. Some people say that they can tell how a person is from their favorite songs. I don’t know whether it’s true, but if it is, then you be the judge.
*Update: I would love to see you guys make your own top 25 (or 10, or 15, or 30 or whatever) of your favorite songs of all time! Please let me know if and when you do!

I LOVE Noa! Just discovered her music recently and fell in love with her angelic voice. Been listening to “Life Is Beautiful” ever since.
King Crimson…very impressed
I’m 26 years old…is it okay if I never heard even a single song from your list?
Different era, maybe?
Musicians don’t make music like these anymore.
Oh yes they do, Rima. Unfortunately.
(And that includes the pomposity of King Crimson.)
I like music genre from 70s, 80s and 90s. Yes I agree with you, musicians nowadays don’t make music like these anymore, today’s musicians just rehash music from previous genres, we can find the similarity by listening the tune, melody, tempo, voice of the singer, and so on.
I vote for King Of Pain by The Police. I love them since I was in elementary school too. I like Wrapped Around Your Finger too. And so many from The Police/Sting.
I like them so much. I even got inspiration from those old songs such as Dear Jessie by Madonna inspired me to write an article in my blog that a rocking lady like Madonna is actually a loving care mother to Lola and Rocco. Or Beautiful Day by U2 inspired me to write something about Jakarta, that we shall see things from positive view. Or other songs that inspired me to write about men trying to catch a girl.
Yes i have more than 25 favorite songs of all time.
Love the header, girl … Didn’t have time to go through the list. Will come back later..
Just wanna say hi!
Miedy: I love her too! An ex introduced me to her music like 10 years ago and I was hooked! lol
Dilligaf: yes, they are impressive lol..
Koko: Koko, I’m not much older than you, but I have always been surrounded by people a great deal older than myself, which is why my musical taste is like it is.
Jakartass: Really? do let me know of obscure pompous musicians like them … I hope liking their music doesn’t make me pompous
yonna: EXACTLY! This happens to myself. When I write music, I find myself to be heavily influenced my the music I listen to. It sucks. lol
I have more than 25 songs too, but I don’t have enough energy to put all 12,347 songs here..
Andie Summerkiss: thanks and hi to you too!! have a good week!!
Babe, numbers 4, 8, 9, 11, 13-18 (particularly 18), 20 and pretty much the rest of the list, say that you are a gay Caucasian male – or straight mainland Chinese.
I know most of these songs (well all of them, but in light of Brett’s comments I am neither gay nor Chinesse, hence an admission to only knowing most of the songs) and none of them are in my list of 25 favourite songs of all time!
That said some of the artists that are on the list feature in my list of favourties
Brett: I am not Chinese, so that makes me a hardcore gay caucasian trapped in a woman’s body ..
Rob Baiton: Well Rob, I know you are definitely not gay, so if what Brett says is true, you must have many gay caucasian friends, not that there is anything wrong with it.
Well, we might not love the same songs, but loving the same artists is the same difference..
I don’t know any of those songs! Gah! We’re not soulmates after all
How come there’s no D’Sound of Fauxliage, or any other songs you sent to me?
@Rima: you and me both (minus the bit about being trapped in a woman’s body). Let’s go shopping!
@Rob: To quote a (drag-queen) friend answering another friend’s defensive response to a suggestion that he might be gay: “Honey, there’s some serious denial going on here. The whole world’s gay. Except George Bush. He’s definitely straight.”
I think you must be Chinese
therry: The songs I sent you are in my top 100. lol
we are soulmates, dont worry..
brett: you, me and my brother MUST go shopping together!!! Let me know if you ever come to europe, we’ll go the the berlin gay parade and just have FUN!!!!

First it was ELO now Flock of Seagulls………….aghh!!

flock of seagulls was something of a guilty pleasure, just like wet wet wet, nik kershaw and kajagoogoo..
bands like simple minds, status quo and dream theater are those i’m proud to tell people i listen too.. lol
Hi Rima.
I was being somewhat satirical in my last comment, although I never did like King Crimson.
However, there are a few so-called prog rock groups from the 70s and 80s, or specific albums of theirs, that I still really like. Some of their more recent work still gets played in Jakartass Towers. For example:
Supertramp – all
Can – German band
It’s A Beautiful Day – violin as lead instrument.
Simple Minds – fantastic live!
Family – each and every album
Carmen – Fandangos in Space (flamenco rock)
Caravan – especially Land Of The Grey And Pink and For Girls Who Grow Plump In The Night, but I’ve got them all.
Aphrodite’s Child – 666 (with Vangelis and Demis Roussos)
Roxy Music – the first (with Eno) before they went ‘pompous’.
Yes – but only the first. All the others with Roger Dean album sleeves fall within the ‘pompous’ (self-indulgent with nonsensical hippy dippy lyrics) category.
Eno – he signed and gave me a copy of Taking Tiger Mountain (by Strategy) back in 74/5 when I wallpapered his flat in London. Again, I’ve got nearly all of his.
I couldn’t give a list of songs because they change virtually on a monthly basis. Besides, much of my 50 gigabytes of MP3s is either in a language I don’t understand e.g. Virginia Rodrigues in Portuguese, or Mari Boine in Sami, or instrumental sounds – modern classical, minimalist or European jazz (e.g.ECM).
I’ll send you a sampler of sounds if you like.
J

Koko, I’m not much older than you, but I have always been surrounded by people a great deal older than myself, which is why my musical taste is like it is.
Yes mbak Rima still young and I’m just a year older than Koko but been influenced by my old brothers and too much watched music channel when I was a kid. LOL.
Knowing there was a MTV Classic or Lanosta (it was on AN teve. the host is Artha Bangun, my…i still remember the host’s name) and vh1 old songs on TV, just like watching a rainbow made me very very happy.
Mbak Rima, me and other young people are young people who loves old time songs
Jakartass: I know several of the bands on your list, but will have to check out the rest!!
Oh, and Simple Minds, I saw them live here in 2006.. they still ROCK!
Dilligaf: Love your list, although there are those a bit too obscure for me, I guess it’s the generation gap, you being 35 and 17 and all..
will check them out..
Yonna: Yeah I still remember Artha’s show… I used to hang out in Prambors in my teenage years and I know him, although I doubt he knows me, seeing there were tons of fans hanging out there at the time..
Your list trumps mine. I like.
